Assessment Process

1

Intake/Interview

During the initial ADHD diagnosis consultation, whether for a child or an adult, the clinician engages in a thorough process involving interviews with both the patient and someone close to them, such as a parent, spouse, or sibling. This step may also include collecting feedback through checklists and written reports from teachers or other relevant figures in the patient's life. The consultation aims to gather information about the patient's social and medical history, family background, strengths, weaknesses, and educational knowledge about ADHD. Clinicians seek to understand the typical daily challenges and functioning of the patient, differentiate ADHD symptoms from other potential causes, and identify strengths to leverage during treatment. While experienced doctors can often form a preliminary opinion during the interview, they typically rely on further tests for objective confirmation.

2

ADHD Tests

In the second step of ADHD diagnosis, various tests are conducted to ascertain if ADHD is present and to rule out other potential issues like learning disabilities or mood disorders. These tests can span from one hour to multiple appointments and encompass ADHD rating scales tailored for different age groups, intelligence tests to detect learning disabilities, broad-spectrum scales for emotional and psychiatric screening, and specific ability tests targeting language, memory, and motor skills. Computer tests, particularly continuous performance tests (CPT), can be used to assess attention and impulsivity.

3

Learning How to Manage Symptoms

Following the completion of the clinical interview and necessary tests, clinicians will review the ADHD evaluation results with you and devise an action plan to manage symptoms effectively. This plan usually includes accommodations for work or school, recommendations for follow-up therapy with specialists like psychologists or ADHD coaches, potential medication suggestions, and a schedule for monitoring progress through follow-up appointments. This personalized approach ensures that individuals with ADHD receive tailored support to enhance their performance and well-being. Additionally, receiving a proper diagnosis can empower individuals and their families by providing them with the tools and strategies needed to navigate daily challenges successfully.
